Why Covering Classes Might Be the Ultimate Teacher PD
This calendar week, I did something I've never done before. Ever. Not in 27 years didactics.
I covered symphonic choir for the music teacher. *Gulp.*
Sure, aye, I'm not new to roofing classes. Merely this was different.
And for a music lover, information technology might have been life changing.
You see, for all intents and purposes, I, the-Shakespeare-loving-composition-grading-vocabulary-inculcating-grammar-correcting senior English teacher became, for almost 42 and a half minutes, a loftier schoolhouse choir director.
And WOOO-EEEEE was it a good time. OMG. So so fun.
Now to be fair, the symphonic choir is made up of some really great students. And one of them took control of the piano and some directing, thank goodness. (I haven't played a full song on the ivories since I was 15 years erstwhile!)
As well, to be clear, about times when teachers are asked to cover another, we have to lose our planning time to do then, and I'grand no fan of that.
(Side annotation: teachers need their planning fourth dimension. Information technology's crucial to existence prepared, specially if nosotros happen to teach four—!!!—preps. And, teachers demand downwards time.) This twelvemonth, nevertheless, my schedule actually allows for covering others, because I am 1 of the in-school-suspension supervisors; thus, if there'southward no one in ISS, as the instance was earlier this week, and then I am gratis to fill-in where needed. (I just love using the give-and-take "thus.")
And this time it was choir. I. LOVED. It. I think I may have establish my next career, my second calling.
Me, this week: an imposter, just a choir director, nonetheless.
I could clap or snap forth (which you lot really can't practice at a schoolhouse concert), try my manus at directing (practicing in the shower paid off), and fifty-fifty trip the light fantastic (I've got some moves, y'know). Heck—I even sang along! And, I was simply astounded looking at their music, considering I realized that choir students actually are learning another language. Merely like math students or robotics students or French students would.
Every instructor should get the opportunity—every bit many as they wish—to cover other teachers' classes.
Hey! Maybe even tradesies once in a while! And yes, I did recall this through. To do and then, and to actually meet the students in their other class'south element, you'd have to merchandise with some other teacher on a mean solar day when there was no new instruction going on. A day when yous really could allow the class show itself off.
It's zilch new for a teacher to discover out that students act ane way in her class but not the same way in his. Nosotros all get information technology, that'south education 101, people. Merely to actually discover the fourth dimension in the schedule to sentinel students excel or struggle in some other class may be a better style for teachers to train in learning differentiation than whatsoever other. Plus, it gives us another manner to leverage our relationships with students. (I watched a student of mine who tin can't read in front of the course without turning red sing her heart out!)
And then teachers, or anyone who works for that matter, as nosotros wind downwardly the year and realize that the winter blahs are right around the corner, consider how y'all might be able to cover someone you work with or trade positions for a modify of step. Information technology could be a groovy way to refresh yourself or to encounter things from a different perspective.
I hateful, I'm already gearing upward for phys. ed. (got a whistle), industrial tech (found my royal record measure), and maybe even a math grade (nonetheless looking for my TI -84 graphing computer)…
We'd dearest to hear. Do yous savour covering classes? Why or why non? Come and share in our WeAreTeachers HELPLINE group on Facebook.
Plus, five things PD trainers should never practice.
